On June 15th, 2018, a significant development for North Karnataka took place.  The Bagalkot - Kudachi New Railway line's first 30-kilometer segment has been put into service, and train service has been started all the way to Khajjidoni.  Once completed, the project will be a huge aid to the districts of Bagalkot and Belagavi.

The first run of the Rail Bus services between Bagalkot and Khajjidoni was flagged off today at 11:00 a.m. from the Bagalkot Railway Station by Shri P.C. Gaddigoudar, Hon'ble MP, Bagalkot and other dignitaries.

Main Features of the Bagalkot-Khajjidoni Section

The 142-kilometer (km) Bagalkot-Kudachi New Railway line project was approved in 2010–2011 at a cost of Rs.986 Cr. and is being carried out on a 50:50 cost-sharing basis between the Government of Karnataka and the Ministry of Railways.  Additionally, the State Government is paying for the expense of land acquisition. Bagalkot and Belagavi Districts are served by this line.  The most energy-efficient means of transportation, the railway, will create new growth opportunities in the Bagalkot District.

Social Impact

Historically, the Chalukya empire's capital was located in Badami, which is now a part of Bagalkot. In the Bagalkot District, Chalukyan art and architecture remnants are popular tourist destinations.  Aihole (the former capital of the Chalukya Kingdom with up to 125 temples dating back to the 5th century AD), KoodalaSangama (the Samadhi of 12th-century social reformist Basavanna known for his crusade against caste exploitation), Gokak Falls, and Kittur (the Palace of Rani Chennamma) are among the tourist destinations connected by the new railway line.

Similar to how the extension of the line further up to Kudachi will connect significant locations like Bagalkot, Lokapur, Yadwad, Mudhol, Jamkhandi, JagdalHarugeri, and Kudachi, facilitating easy movement of people and products. This rail service is expected to attract tourist in this area.
