Train 18 - Indian railway
India's long-anticipated domestically produced semi high-speed train, known as "Train 18," is slated for release in September. This name, "Train 18," reflects its production year, which is 2018. The train sets are being manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, where the design work is complete, and the final touches are being added to the pre-production processes.

The Train 18, constructed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai to promote the "Make in India" initiative, boasts a top speed of 160 km per hour. Unlike traditional locomotive-hauled trains, Train 18 operates without an engine and is self-propelled using electric traction, akin to metro trains. It is poised to replace existing intercity express trains, including the Shatabdi. ICF plans to manufacture six train sets, two of which will feature sleeper coaches.
Notably, driver cabins are situated in the last coaches at both ends of the train, enabling it to operate in either direction as needed, eliminating the time-consuming process of engine reversal. The power is distributed among all the coaches, resulting in quicker acceleration and deceleration compared to conventional trains.
According to ICF designers, Train 18 strikes a balance between the stability and robustness of LHB coaches and the globally employed distributed traction power technology. Similar to Shatabdi coaches, Train 18 will offer both a Second Class and a premium First Class. Both classes are equipped with modern amenities, including automatic doors and a Wi-Fi hub for streaming entertainment on passengers' personal devices.
Despite each coach of the train sets costing around Rs 6 crore, more than double the price of its locomotive-hauled, LHB counterpart, the cost is justified by the elimination of a locomotive and the increase in capacity. Additionally, the higher speed and faster turnaround times of these train sets are expected to generate greater revenue for the Railways.
