A medical emergency in a train refers to a situation where a passenger or passengers on a train experience sudden and unexpected health issues or injuries that require immediate medical attention.These emergencies can range from minor ailments like motion sickness or fainting to more severe conditions such as heart attacks, seizures, or accidents.
If you find yourself in such a situation, there's no need to panic. With the assistance of Indian Railways, you can receive medical help while traveling. We'll explain how you can get help if your health deteriorates during a train journey.
Whom to approach in medical emergency?
Indian Railways has established systems and facilities to address such emergencies and provide timely medical aid to passengers in need.
Step 1 Contact Ticket Train Examiner (TTE)
- If you feel unwell during your journey with Indian Railways, you can contact the Train Ticket Examiner (TTE) or any Onboard staff. According to railway regulations, it is the duty of the TTE to assist you.
- TTE will facilitate the process of obtaining first aid medical assistance onboard the train. In fact, TTE is in contact with nearest control room and if required can request a doctor at the next station.
- As per Railway policy , Doctor consultation fees on board is kept at Rs.100.
Step 2 Dial 139 Helpline Number
- If you are unable to contact the TTE, you can immediately call for help by dialing the number 139. Afterward, doctors will be available at the next station to assist you.
Step 3 Social Media for Assistance:
- In the event of illness during your train journey, you can also seek help through social media. By tagging IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) on Twitter and providing your PNR (Passenger Name Record) and other essential details, you enable the Railways to respond promptly to your medical emergency.
Step 4 Lodge Grievances on Railmadad
- Passenger may also lodge / seek help through online web/ mobile app of Railmadad.
Step 5 Onboard Medical Facilities:
- Under the new system, trains are now equipped with a dedicated compartment for doctors, ensuring rapid medical assistance during emergencies.
- Furthermore, medical boxes containing various medications and essential first aid equipment have been installed on several trains for passengers' convenience.
Step 6 Medical facility at Station
- Medical Facilities at Railway Stations are equipped with medical facilities to handle emergencies that may arise during halts or layovers.
Step 7 Preparedness Before Travel
- To prevent falling ill while traveling by train, take necessary precautions before embarking on your journey. If you have pre-existing medical conditions, ensure you have essential medications such as asthma inhalers, insulin, or pain relievers with you.
- Opt for light and hygienic food, and stay well-hydrated throughout your journey by drinking plenty of water.
