JAN AHAAR OUTLET AT RAILWAY STATION

Introduction

Jan Ahaar stalls, also known as Jan Ahaar outlets, are an initiative of Indian Railways to provide affordable and hygienic meals to passengers at railway stations across India. These stalls aim to offer good quality vegetarian and non-vegetarian food options at reasonable prices. These outlets typically serve a range of dishes, snacks, and beverages to cater to the varied tastes of travellers.
The main objectives of Jan Ahaar stalls are to improve the overall food experience of railway passengers, maintain hygiene standards, and offer meals at prices that are affordable to a broader section of the traveling population.

The Need for Jan Aahaar Stalls

Traveling by train has always been a popular and convenient mode of transportation in India. However, passengers often faced challenges in accessing good quality food during their journeys. The options were limited, and the pricing was often unreasonably high.
Recognising this concern, the Indian Railways took the initiative to introduce Jan Aahar stalls in the year 2009 starting outlets at Howrah, Bangalore, Chennai and Secunderabad stations, aiming to address the food-related issues faced by passengers.

Food price at Jan Ahaar Outlet

Indian railway had constituted a committee for better food management at outlets and also to decide food price at these outlets. As per initiative of committee, Food costs at the Jan Ahaar outlets are in the range of Rs 5 to Rs 50.

  2. Jan Ahaar of providing quality and hygienic food at affordable price to the passengers is, apparently, an eye wash. The effectiveness of It’s implementation is not monitored by the Railway authorities concerned.
Recently I asked for Jan Ahaar Outlet at New Delhi Paharganj side at 6:30 pm, they replied it is not yet made, it will take half hour to prepare. I waited half hour and when asked again they said it would take another half hour or more. I called on the incharge and told him I would make a complaint. He asked for sometime and they prepared but the staff got together and started misbahaving by asking “Kya Dikkat hein” “Ticket kaha hei” etc. And also the incharge was telling we would give only one Jan Ahaar per ticket. Where as they neither asked for tickets when I bought 3 Biryani packets at the same time. First of all Railway authorities shall implement measure to protect the travellers from this rude threatening behaviours of catering contractors and their local staff as travellers are usually one or with families.
