What is fog pass device?

Fog pass stands for fog pilot assistance system for safety (Pass). The FOG PASS is a device uses GPS technology to assist the Train driver in navigating through foggy weather by providing real-time information about approaching landmarks such as Signal, Level Crossing gate (Manned & Unmanned), Permanent Speed Restrictions, Neutral Sections etc through a combination of audio and visual guidance. it also provides approach indications for the next three fixed landmarks in geographical order, complemented by a voice message alerting the pilot approximately 500 meters before reaching the landmark. This comprehensive feature set ensures that loco pilots are well-informed and alerted in a timely manner, contributing to enhanced safety and operational efficiency.
Indian Railways has provisioned 19,742 Fog Pass Devices to ensure seamless rail operations in foggy weather conditions.

Key feature of fog pass device

The key feature of Fog pass device are as follows:
GPS-Based Navigation: FOG PASS relies on GPS technology, offering precise location data to loco pilots. This feature is crucial in maintaining operational efficiency and safety, especially when visibility is severely compromised.
Real-time Information Display: The device provides real-time information through visual and voice guidance. It displays details such as the speed of the locomotive, distance to upcoming landmarks, and time to reach them, aiding loco pilots in making informed decisions.
Landmark Mapping: The entire data of a specific railway section, including signals, stations, level crossing gates, warning boards, curves, and gradients, is meticulously mapped using GPS and fed into the device. This comprehensive mapping ensures that loco pilots receive alerts for all critical landmarks.
Audio and Visual Alerts: FOG PASS employs a dual-alert system, using both audio and visual cues. Loco pilots are pre-alerted well in advance, around 500 meters before approaching any landmark. This early warning system is instrumental in preventing overshooting and ensuring road-user safety.
Portable and Standalone: The device is designed to be handheld, portable, and compact. It can be easily carried by the loco pilot and placed on the cab desk of the locomotive.
Compatibility:Compatible with all electric and diesel locomotives Suitable for EMUs/MEMUs/DEMUs.
Speed:Applicable for train speeds up to 160 KMPH.
Data Storage:Each FogPASS unit retains essential events for Date diagnostic purposes for 15 days.
Battery:Built-in rechargeable battery backup for 18 hours.

How Fog Pass device works??

The FOG PASS device operates as a GPS-based navigation system and relies on Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to determine the precise location of the train on the railway track. The entire railway section, including fixed landmarks such as signals, level crossing gates (both Manned and Unmanned), permanent speed restrictions, and neutral sections, is meticulously mapped using GPS into the system. Based on fed GPS data , device provides real time information through a display and voice guidance system.FOG PASS is programmed to display approach indications for the next three fixed landmarks in geographical order and also provide alerts approximately 500 meters before reaching any approaching landmark. This information is crucial for loco pilots to anticipate upcoming landmarks and make informed decisions.

Commissioning Process

One of the standout features of the FOG PASS device is its quick commissioning process. In less than 30 days, a complete zonal railway can have the system up and running. A GPS survey followed by validation testing ensures the accuracy and efficiency of the device.

Impact on Railway operation

the Fog PASS device has a multifaceted impact on railway operations, ranging from safety enhancements and punctuality improvements to the overall efficiency of train services, especially in regions prone to dense fog. Its successful deployment showcases the positive strides in leveraging technology to overcome weather-related challenges in the railway industry.
